What?

A CALL TO ACTION!

Avon Hello Green Tomorrow is the world’s first-ever global tree-planting campaign, leveraging Avon’s unique ability to educate, engage and mobilize people worldwide. Over sixty-five countries are taking part in this unique effort, and together we can help save South America’s Atlantic Rainforest, one of the most critical and endangered ecosystems on earth.

The trees will be planted in partnership with The Nature Conservancy, which will oversee the planting and serve as the steward of the forest. All trees planted through the Hello Green Tomorrow campaign will support the United Nations Environment Programme Plant for the Planet initiative.

ONE MILLION TREES AND COUNTING...

Avon has kicked off the Hello Green Tomorrow campaign by donating $1 million for 1 million trees, which will restore nearly 2,500 acres of the Atlantic Rainforest. Now we need your help to plant millions more to restore this irreplaceable natural treasure and help ensure a “green” and healthy future for the next generation.

All it takes is $1 for each tree.

WHAT WILL BE PLANTED?

The most important species for this effort include (the following descriptions are courtesy of The Nature Conservancy):

  • Capororoca Tree (Myrsine ferruginea): The fruit of the Capororoca is feast for the animals, especially birds like the Rufous-bellied Thrush.
  • Golden Trumpet Tree (Tabebuia umbellate): Beloved for its yellow flowers, popular belief holds that when it blooms, no more frosts will occur. The wood has the same fire rating as concrete and is denser than water. Its increasing popularity has led to an abundance of illegal logging activity.
  • Guapuruvu Tree (Schizolobium parahyba): The Guapuruva is an indigenous plant of the Atlantic Forest, found nowhere else on earth. It is one of the native species with the fastest growth rate.
  • Ice Cream Bean Tree (Inga edulis): Known for its high production of leafy biomass, the Ice Cream Bean tree controls weeks and erosion. Its popular fruit is a long pod, sometimes a few feet in length, containing a white juicy pulp surrounded by large seeds. The pulp is sweet, and resembles vanilla ice cream.

WHY?

TO ENSURE A GREENER TOMORROW

Tropical forests are the “lungs of the earth,” critical to the health and wellbeing of all living creatures worldwide, and an important factor in mitigating climate change. Deforestation is second only to the burning of fossil fuels as a source of the carbon dioxide emissions (one of the “greenhouse gases”) that cause climate change. The rainforests also support an extraordinary biodiversity of animals, plants and birds that are important to the balance of life on earth.

The Atlantic Rainforest stretches across parts of Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, and it is one of the most endangered tropical forest on earth. Once the size of the U.S. seaboard from Maine to South Carolina, today only seven percent remains, in small, isolated pockets. The Atlantic Rainforest is also home to a remarkable array of wildlife and almost unparalleled biological diversity, including 20,000 species of plants and 1,000 species of birds, many found nowhere else on earth.

In addition to the environmental impact, 120 million people directly depend upon the Atlantic Rainforest for water and hydroelectric power, and the restoration efforts will also generate local jobs, strengthen local conservation institutions and support important water resource protection.

There is much to gain. If the entire Atlantic Rainforest is restored, it will ultimately remove 10 million tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere every year.

To ensure a greener tomorrow, we must act now. All it takes is $1.00 per tree.

how?

$1 PLANTS ONE TREE. IT’S THAT SIMPLE.

Add one tree or dozens to build your own “mini-forest” – for yourself or in honor of a loved one.

Each dollar plants a tree in South America’s critically endangered Atlantic Rainforest, which is 93% percent deforested. Avon Hello Green Tomorrow is raising the funds, and appropriate trees will be planted and carefully managed by The Nature Conservancy and local conservation partners as part of their efforts to restore 2.5 million acres of the Atlantic Rainforest.

For every tree you donate, you will also receive a thank you certificate that includes “green” tips for every day to remember to reduce, reuse, recycle, rethink and replant. Use the tips yourself and share the ideas with friends and family.

PARTNERS

The Nature Conservancy

The Nature Conservancy (TNC) was founded in 1951 and is the leading conservation organization working around the world to protect ecologically important lands and waters for nature and people. The organization works in more than 30 countries and has protected more than 119 million acres of land and 5,000 miles of rivers worldwide, and they operate over 100 marine conservation projects globally. The Conservancy is a key partner in the Avon Hello Tomorrow Fund program. Working with its Brazil-based team and local conservation partners, The Nature Conservancy will plant and restore the trees as well as monitor the restored forest, ensuring the long-term benefits of the Atlantic Rainforest.

United Nations Environment Programme

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the voice for the environment within the United Nations systems. The UNEP mission is to provide leadership and encourage partnership in caring for the environment by inspiring, informing, and enabling nations and peoples to improve their quality of life without compromising that of future generations. The Billion Tree Campaign will make a substantial contribution to the 2010 International Year of Biodiversity, raising awareness of the importance of biodiversity for our well-being.

where?

The Atlantic Rainforest of South America spans the Atlantic coast of Paraguay, Argentina and Brazil. Five hundred years ago, it covered approximately 330 million acres (about twice the size of Texas). Today, only seven percent remains. While it is located in South America, the Atlantic Rainforest is one of the critical forests that serve as the “lungs of the earth” for everyone, everywhere.

It is also one of the greatest repositories for biodiversity on the earth, with 20,000 plant species, 1,000 bird species and 23 primate species, many found nowhere else on earth.

People in over 65 countries are joining together through the Hello Green Tomorrow program to help restore the Atlantic Rainforest, representing the first-ever global mobilization for a forest restoration.

Every dollar brings us one step closer to a green tomorrow. It’s that simple - and now is the time to take action!

Green Tips

Small daily changes can have a big effect. Remember to: Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Rethink, Replant.

Replant

Indigenous Plants

Replant

Select indigenous and drought tolerant plants, including varieties that attract birds and butterflies, for your home garden, and replace at least part of the lawn with plantings that require less water, fertilizer and maintenance.

What's New

THE LIFECYCLE OF T-SHIRT.

A T-Shirt Is No Simple Thing

Most of us buy products without thinking about where they are from. But if you are a scientist, or one of the growing number of environmentally conscious consumers, you think about the impact of a product all across its life, or the “lifecycle.” Environmental impacts occur at many points during a product’s life: when the raw material is extracted and processed, when the item is shipped to the store, and when it is used by the consumer, and ultimately, when it is disposed of.
